Pink challengers paddle for courage, strength and change
Driving across the Penang Bridge during peak traffic hours is enough to test anyone’s patience, but imagine paddling across the 3.8km channel on a narrow dragon boat, fighting waves, floating objects and maritime traffic. A group of plucky women from the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) became the first team of breast cancer survivors to accomplish this mentally and physically challenging feat.
The Pink Challengers set out from Butterworth at 8.30am on Sunday 29 March with the wind in their hair and the spirit of adventure in their veins! Paddling alongside the women in pink was the Royal Australian Air Force team from Butterworth lending their vocal encouragement and support.
About four hours later the Pink Challengers reached the island to receive a great welcome from the Harley Owners Group (HOG) Malaysia Chapter and other bikers. Mission accomplished! The achievement of the Pink Challengers is a great example for Malaysians that breast cancer is not a death sentence, and women can live active lives after their treatment. Remember, early detection saves lives!
Pacific West was humbled to support the Pink Challengers on their quest, by loaning the team a dragon boat, oars and life jackets. The women were definitely the perfect ‘ambassadors’ for dragon boat racing!
